Kanawha Valley TimeBank

TimeBanking The Kanawha Valley TimeBank, a community service organization, continues to expand a program of exchanging volunteer services among its members. The project began in April, 2014, with 8 members, and has grown to more than 20 since then. You do not have to be a KVVP member to join or use the timebank. Timebank members earn “credit” for each hour of volunteer service they perform for other members, for member  organizations, or for project administration. Those credits can be exchanged for free services they need and receive from other timebank members. There is no exchange of goods or money! Timebanking benefits a community by connecting unmet needs with unused resources. It provides some of the services that people need in order to maintain themselves and their homes, and can be a true “isolation buster” especially for the elderly and particularly for those with disabilities. People of all ages are welcome and encouraged to share their skills to assist others while building credits they can use to meet their own needs. Recent service exchanges include reading assistance to a member who is visually impaired, gardening work, plant care for a member who traveled out-of-state for several weeks,  connecting a member with a group of volunteers to work on her house, assistance with computer use, editing, and daily check-in calls to an elderly person living alone. Each member records his or her hours at hOurworld, a timebanking management site where the KV TimeBank’s activity is recorded. More than 20,000 members in more than 250 communities have exchanged more than 1.2 million hours of service through timebanking! Click here to read more about timebanking at hOurworld. Our timebank is still very small, but with a goal of 80 –  100 active members, the KV TimeBank will soon be humming with activity and many more services can be provided. Come join us today!
